Large mesh drift nets are illegal in the territorial waters of the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and the coasts of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii. California passed a phaseout of large-mesh drift gillnets in state waters to protect marine life in 2018.
The bipartisan bill vetoed by Trump would have added protections to the federal waters off California’s and authorized NOAA to assist the commercial fishing industry’s transition to more sustainable gear.

Expect the bill to be reintroduced, passed, and signed by Joe Biden.
