A very thin thread.
Back in July, Canadian government fisheries watchdogs decided not to add the Chilcotin River and Thompson River steelhead populations to the list of Wildlife Species at Risk.
Now, look where we are.
The projected spawning escapement of Thompson River steelhead based on a whopping two steelhead caught in all the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans test fisheries rapidly nearing conclusion this year is 86 fish. The figure represents the Thompson only. It’s neighbor, the Chilcotin, comes in at 39. Think about that – a grand total of 125 steelhead for the two most productive tributaries of the mighty Fraser River system.
