Tony Friedrich spells out what’s a stake when it comes to menhaden management and the potential threat to striped bass populations.
This fall, menhaden are going to be under the gun yet again. Amendment 3 for menhaden management was introduced in 2015 to address several concerns in the fishery, including the adoption of ecological reference points, which would manage menhaden for their importance as forage and role in the greater ecosystem rather than as a species that is just harvested.
The other side wants to harvest more menhaden. We can’t let that happen. Menhaden must be managed for their ecological significance.
