On October 12, 2023, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that Maryland’s 2023 juvenile abundance index was 1.02, “well below the long-term average of 11.1.” In fact, the 2023 juvenile abundance index was the second-lowest ever recorded in a time series dating back to 1957; only an index of 0.89, recorded in 2012, was lower.
