Kentaro Sakai is a champion breeder of nishikigoi carp aka koi fish. Just last year, one sold at an auction for an astounding amount of money— nearly $2 million USD. Sakai’s carp are prized by wealthy collectors for their vivid colors, distinct patterns and glossy skin. Sakai invites us to his fish farm in Hiroshima, Japan, to see how he raises these fish, who lead pretty pampered lives in his care.
Some southern English canals, lakes and even chalkstreams (where I saw and caught three (on fly, so I was really really cool) ten years ago, then phoned someone I knew in the London suburbs with a pond full of the creatures to ask him to come out and collect) … the damned things – flooded out of garden ponds, or illegally stocked when a Koi-keeper owner died or had to move to somewhere pond-less – are absolutely everywhere. Some pretty hefty, completely outgrown the bowl, goldfish, too.
And as for the non-native Wels European Catfish … fish of a lifetime for SOME, nothing but a useless “One man’s meat is another’s monster poisson” invasive…
