Butch Suor’s fight for more portable bathrooms at steelhead fishing holes has made its way to the Idaho Legislature and could spawn improved funding not only for outhouses but also riverside parking areas, boat ramps and even salmon and steelhead research.
Two years ago, when the Stites man asked the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to place more toilets along the South Fork of the Clearwater River during steelhead season, he was told there was no money for it. He wanted to know why and started digging into the department’s funding sources.
A few months later, he stood before Idaho Fish and Game commissioners at their annual meeting in Lewiston to complain about the shrinking value of a set-aside account supported by the sale of salmon and steelhead permits.
