Fishing Beyond the River follows Bucky Buchstaber and his team on a journey throughout the stunning and unique landscapes of Thailand in pursuit of the elusive blue mahseer. Unforgiving jungle terrains, exotic wildlife, and seemingly endless miles of river make for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. But fishing victories are often short lived, which is why this dedicated team is setting out to prove how fly fishing can change the world one cast at a time.
I wish those boys and girls in that little movie the very very best. As a younger man, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I had a similar project in mind (and so very nearly up and running) for the Indian mahseer and had a lot of key local people on-board – from New Delhi-based Lok Sabha politicians, to both local and national State wildlife and forestry departments, to Indian elite fishers and dedicated birds-‘n’-wildlife conservationists, to the vital river-people on the ground.
Then the personal publicity- and profit-hungry big fish bucketlist carpetbaggers arrived…..
So – all the best from me to those trying to make a difference now in Thailand.
