The steelhead angling community has begun to eat its own when it comes to responding to the abysmal returns on the Columbia. For many of us, the antidote to declining steelhead runs in the lower 48 was the waters of the Skeena River system in BC, which saw decent numbers of returning fish until this year. Sadly, this year’s BC steelhead returns are trending along the lines of the Columbia, and the divide on conservation vs. commerce has come to what was once a steelhead oasis in a desert of diminishing returns.
When it comes to the current state of steelhead, the baseline is shifting in real-time, and in BC, that includes the escapement numbers.
