On a recent Wednesday afternoon, Wendy Katagi—watershed planner by day, inspirational songwriter by night—got up in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens and a sang a passionate ode to the steelhead trout.
“Steelhead run, steelhead run to the highest mountains,” crooned the senior manager of Stillwater Sciences to her fellow environmentalists, who had gathered for a scientific forum on the L.A. River’s native fish. “Steelhead run, steelhead run, ’til you reach the ocean run…”
