The Alaska Federation of Natives, the largest statewide Native organization in Alaska recently endorsed efforts to restore the Eklutna River and called for the release of water to support salmon and Eklutna Dena’ina peoples.
Traditionally known as Idlughetnu (Id-lug-het-nu), the Eklutna River and its wild salmon runs have supported the Dena’ina (Eklutna peoples) since time immemorial. Historic hydroelectric development on the river has greatly diminished the rivers formerly flourishing salmon fisheries since the early 1900s.
