The 23rd Annual Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Fishing Championship, presented by Costa, was held this past September in Islamorada, welcoming back a devoted crowd of over 100 anglers to challenge themselves in this unique and venerated event. The HLM was founded in 1999 by Dr. Lloyd Wruble in honor of the late Herman Lucerne, a pioneer of angling in the backcountry of the Everglades. The tournament is dedicated to creating a community devoted to educating and raising awareness of the issues faced by the Everglades and Florida Bay, as well as raising support for the solutions that will preserve and restore the angler experience in this precious ecosystem for the generations to come.
The Herman Lucerne Memorial is a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.
