Wyoming Game and Fish fisheries biologists, technicians, and volunteers were electrofishing Lower Flat Creek just south of the fish hatchery on the National Elk Refuge, a stretch of river that gets hammered by fly fishermen from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31.
The goal: Determining just how many native Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout were dwelling in the deep pockets of river that, in some places, cut under the stream banks, providing excellent habitat for large, hungry cutties.
The answer: A lot. And not just a lot of fish. A lot of big fish. Possibly, the fattest fish ever.
