Key West the voters approved ballot measures to ban the biggest cruise ships that damage coral reefs with mile-long silt trails churned up as they come and go. Captain Will Benson who was one of the first to sound the alarm says the vessels also stir up the bottom of the six-mile channel to the port, damaging habitat and disrupting migration patterns of game fish.
Now, against the will of the voters, new legislation would seize control of the ports in Key West by the state of Florida and allow mega cruise liners to resume docking.
