Phil Niekro, whose signature knuckleball fooled generations of hitters and earned him a spot in Cooperstown, died last week in his sleep after a long battle with cancer.
Niekro could not only pitch he could also fish. Loran Smith who fished with Niekro for years and introduced him to the man who taught him to fly fish penned this fitting tribute to his friend and fishing buddy.
