The state of Texas has spent more than a century building up a world-class fishery, with some unintended consequences.
Texas has been hatching and stocking fish ever since 1879. Since then more than one hundred species of fish and shellfish have been introduced to the state, about half of them brought here by state or federal agencies. The imports have transformed freshwater fishing in Texas, both by design and completely by accident—and for both better and worse.
