In a blow to conservation groups, Montana environmental officials moved closer to approving a controversial copper mine in the Smith River drainage. Their final report says the mine could be built without causing significant harm to the famous stream.
Environmental groups have already said they are going to fight the decision in the courts.
In what could be fodder for his election opponent this November, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont. said he was happy to see the project advance.
