RIO Episode 5 – HOW TO FISH A NYMPH & INDICATOR

In this episode of RIO’s “How To” series, RIO marketing coordinator Russ Miller explains how to “fish a nymph & indicator” in a river. As easy as this sounds, Russ’s tips will certainly help improve the skills and catch rate for most anglers.

RIO’s “How To” videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique.

These invaluable lessons for the fly fisher are packed with information and top tips, and each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

  1. Really great introduction video to indicator nymphing!

I’ve found that the biggest factor for success when nymphing is to make sure your nymphs are directly down on, or right near the river bottom – and your strike indicator is very helpful in determining this.

Due to friction with the river bottom, water currents almost always move faster at the surface than on the bottom. So if your strike indicator is drifting downstream at the same speed as the surface current, you know your nymphs are not on or near the bottom because they are drifting in the faster current near the river’s surface. When your strike indicator drifts downstream slightly slower than the surface current, you know your nymphs are drifting near the bottom because they are in the slower, bottom current.

It’s a simple little trick but can make a huge difference!
